If you’ve been using one or more blankets throughout your home during the past few months, you’ll want to be sure to have them laundered before you put them away in advance of spring and summer
For this post, we wanted to highlight some of cleaning methods you’ll want to use, depending on the types of blankets you have.
Fleece blankets
This type of blanket can be washed in a standard washing machine, but you’ll want to avoid washing it with non-fleece items. (ie: don’t toss a bunch of t-shirts into the load.) You’ll want to use the a gentle, warm-water cycle to achieve the best results. On the other hand, if you have a stackable, all-in-one unit, you may be better served by washing your fleece blankets at the laundromat.
Wool blankets
Wool blankets shouldn’t be machine laundered, but that’s not to say they don’t need to be aired out. This can be accomplished by hanging it outside for a few hours, or, if you have the space, you can hang it in a part of your home that has a lot of air circulation.
Knitted / crochet blankets
A lot of us still have hand-knitted blankets from when we were children. These need to be handled (and laundered) with care. These blankets should be hand washed using cold water and a mild detergent. Once they’re clean, you’ll want to them air dry. This can be done in one of two ways. They can either be dried flat by placing it on a bath towel, or, if you have some space outside where you can hang it gently, this is also an option.
Heated blankets
This type of blanket needs to be handled with care for all of the obvious reasons. To start, you’ll want to make sure it’s disconnected from all power sources, and you’ll want to remove all of the cords that you can. From there, you’ll want to soak it in a mix of lukewarm water and mild detergent. Most cleaning experts suggest letting the blanket soak for about 15 minutes. When you remove it, you’ll want to squeeze the water out of it. We do not suggest wringing it. Once a sufficient amount of water has been removed, you’ll want to hang it out to dry.
