How To Prevent Your House From Filling Up With Dust

Dust is nothing more than an annoyance, so it’s natural that no one wants to live in a dusty home. However, as much as we fight it, dust is nearly impossible to avoid!

But don’t worry! You can still do some things to reduce the dust and prevent your home from looking like an abandoned house. Here are seven tips to help free your home from dust.

Tip #1. Change your bedding regularly

Making the bed every morning isn’t enough to stop dust from settling on it! We all accumulate dust (or dead skin) throughout the day; at night, we leave all those particles on our sheets to collect over time.

So, to avoid dust being trapped in the sheets for a long time, change and wash your bedding regularly. A rule of thumb is to machine wash the sheets and covers (with hot water to reduce dust mites, if possible) every one or two weeks.

Tip #2. Declutter your home

The fewer things you have sitting around, the fewer places where dust can settle. So, start decluttering your home and sort the stuff you don’t need at hand!

However, decluttering your home doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to throw all your things away! Simply putting them in a cabinet or storage bin will help with the dust.

Tip #3. Stop bringing the dirt in with your shoes

The outside world is filled with dust and dirt. So, when you go out and come home, it’s natural that some of that dust gets on your shoes.

So why leave your shoes at the door? This way, you can stop dragging so much outdoor dust and dirt! If you don’t like the idea of walking around barefoot, assign a pair of shoes or slippers for indoors only.

Tip #4. Reduce the number of fabrics at home

Fabrics attract dust and leave lint behind, so if you don’t want your house filling up with debris, try to avoid having too many textile items or fabric furniture.

However, if you can’t get rid of every piece of textile, just make sure you clean it more often—vacuuming rugs and furniture at least twice a week will do!

Tip #5. Cover your surfaces

Try covering surfaces you don’t often clean (like the top shelves) or even places that get dusty very quickly (like tables or sections on your floors).

You can use newspapers, tablecloths, and mats to cover many of these things! This way, instead of repeatedly cleaning those spaces, you can take the covers and shake them off over a trash can.

Tip #6. Keep your pets well groomed

Pets tend to carry a lot of dirt on their fur and paws. So, every time they come back inside your house, they bring all kinds of small debris with them.

To avoid this issue, the best thing you can do is keep your pets well-groomed! This way, you can get rid of most of the little pieces of dirt that get stuck on your furry friend’s hair. For example, brush their hair at least three times a week and wipe their paws clean after each walk!

Tip #7. Maintain a cleaning routine

Since stopping dust from settling around your home is altogether impossible, a cleaning routine is the best way to keep any space dust-free.

Whether it’s a quick dusting, vacuuming, or wiping surfaces, always save some time for keeping your home in top shape!
