The reason for this is simple—the hairsprays of decades past used to contain a lot of alcohol. Today’s hairsprays do not. If you decide to spray down your favorite sweater with a bottle of Aquanet because you’re wanting to address a stain, you’re not going to have a lot of success in removing it.

When you use additional detergent, it may be harder to rinse the soap from your clothes and in some cases, you may need to run the washer twice. (If you need to run your washer twice to get your clothes clean, the “hack” definitely isn’t a hack.)
Remember- more is not always better. If you need a little extra help whitening your whites, consider adding some backing soda to the water. (Most experts agree that one cup per load of laundry works great.) If your clothes (or towels) smell especially sour, consider adding a cup of vinegar to the water at the start of a cycle.
