Tips for Organizing Your Garage

Naples house cleaningMost people find their garages are less organized than they’d like. From kids’ bikes, to sports equipment to holiday decorations, it can be hard to keep track of where your belongings are.

The good news is that organizing your garage is easier than you think. It will take some time, but with effort and planning, you’ll be able to get the job done.

Block some time

Cleaning out your garage isn’t like cleaning out a closet—which means you’ll need to set aside some time to do it. Most organizational experts suggest setting aside a full weekend day to do get the tackle the task. You’ll also want to make sure the forecast doesn’t call for rain, because you may need to pull things out and place them in the driveway while the effort is underway.

Keep, donate, toss

If it’s been years since you’ve decluttered your garage, you’re likely to find items you no longer want. Take some time to decide what you want to hold onto, what you want to donate and what can be tossed in the trash.

Create sections

One of the best tips for organizing this part of your house is to create separate sections for sporting equipment, seasonal décor, tools and general storage. This will allow you to find things more easily in the future.

Plan your layout

Tools may be best stored in an area closest to the house, while recycling may be best stored close to the garage door. Place items you use frequently in easy-to-reach places. Store items you don’t use frequently (ie: Christmas lights) on high or low shelves.

Consider storage bins or shelves

If your garage doesn’t have shelving or cabinets, you may want to consider having some installed. Shelves and cubbies are great places to store sports gear, bicycle helmets and other more commonly used items.

Hire help

If you think the job will be too much to tackle on your own, you may want to hire a cleaning service to help you get organized. Not only will this help save time, it means you’ll have extra hands to help you clean your garage while you’re sorting through it. You may also want to consider scheduling a quarterly or semi-annual cleaning schedule, which will help keep the space organized in the future.
