Tips for reducing pet odors in your home

If you have one or more fur babies, you likely understand the plights associated with pet fur and dander. In some cases, no matter how hard (or how much) you clean, it can be difficult to get rid of animal-related odors.

If you’re not a person who likes to live in a home that smells like a kennel, you’ll be relieved to learn that there are things you can do to minimize the scents your furballs leave behind.

Starting from the top

They say that a dog is a man’s best friend, but if you live in a household with one or more pets, we think that baking soda is a better choice.  Baking soda can be sprinkled over carpet in advance of vaccuming and it can also be used to reduce odors associated with urine spots. It may not help with stains, but it can certainly help reduce smells.

There are also a few enzymatic cleaning products that work well for reducing urine odor. Products such as Nature’s Miracle or Rocco & Roxie can be purchased at most pet stores.

Launder the bedding

You’ll want to make sure to wash machine-washable pet bedding on a regular basis. If the bedding is especially stinky, we recommend adding a box of baking soda into the load. Like we just said, baking soda truly is a pet owner’s best friend!

Give them a good brushing

The frequency at which you should brush your pets will depend on the breed and the length of their hair. Some breeds should be brushed daily, while others can get by with weekly brushing.  Not only is this a great way to bond with your pet, it’s a great way to remove extra fur that would otherwise collect around your house.

Consider a food change

We once had a client who had a dog who was as stinky as she was cute, regardless as to how often she was bathed. Our client’s vet suggested using a higher-quality pet food and within weeks, the pet stink was gone.
